I was very happy to find this site. I am hoping someone can help me identify or have some information regarding this necklace. I apologize for the not so great images.
It looks to be a piece of hand made Native American beadwork, done for the tourist trade in the early part of the 20th century. My guess is an Eastern tribe may have done the work, but I am far from an authority on this type of thing. It is just my guess from looking at the photos. It is very nice!
I agree with Linda. I do not think it's Native American beadwork but more likely a handloomed sautoir. One of the popular looms for making this type of sautoir in the 1920's was "The Apache Beadwork Loom." There are several examples in "Fashions of the Roaring '20s" by Ellie Lauber.
Thanks to all for the information. I never knew the word sautoir even existed. Now that I know what it is, I can enjoy it and show it off a bit when friends come over.
