Has anyone got any tips on dating shoes? Is there any features which are common amongst certain types, or is there a thread I can browse through which already discusses this? Thank you all!

I don't think we have one specific thread related to dating shoes - there's a lot to think about, like heel shape, toebox shape, font used on the insoles, size terms used (As and Bs for width are older, more recent decades use N, M and W), where they were made and so much more.

Lisam's suggestion of posting photos is good - and it helps to see a profile, overhead shot and a shot of the lining and insole. If you'd like to develop your own knowledge, consider investing in a book: post # 5 in this pinned book and resource link offers some suggestions

I would agree with that post that my favorite shoe book out there is The Seductive Shoe by Jonathan Walford, a trade member here at VFG. His knowledge is phenomenal.

I agree with the others: Jonathan's books are excellent and I've also got some good ones from Caroline Cox. There's a lot to know about shoe design and how it dates, as styles frequently change. If anything, I find shoe design more prone to fashion changes than garments - certainly in the last twenty years it's like almost every season something has changed.

You might like my recent blog post - a brief history of the Mary Jane - it will give you some pointers to look for.

I 4th or 5th the recommendations of both of Jonathan's shoe books, The Seductive Shoe and Shoes A-Z. Very informative, great pix, love 'em both! Sue
