I can see why you think late '40's from the back. Is it copper or brass and if it's copper is the front enamelled or painted?

Gosh Linn, I'm not sure, I just assumed it was enamelled, but at closer look i can see the color of the "paint" in a few spots on the sides...? What's the sure tell tell signs of difference?

There are too types of enamel. One is cold enamel which is basically paint and the other is glass enamel which is fired in a kiln. Some of us did this at camp! Copper enamel jewelry was very popular in the '50's, while cold enamel was very popular in the late '30's and '40's. Can you tell if the metal is brass or copper?

Sometimes it is hard to tell what type of enamel is there but glass enamel has a sort of transparency for lack of a better word.

Hmmm. I don't believe it's copper, and the paint color is not transparent. a "drip on the side chiped off with a nail scratch... looks better now! Must be painted? I got this from Germany so I'm sure it's not American. Could it be brass plated or just a gold tone metal?
