Hello all you knowledgeable vintage lovers! I have yet another garment that I need some assistance in dating. I know almost nothing about capes/cape styles. What would you guess for this one? Also, do any of you know a good reference for dating capes/coats? Thanks as always!

Can you give a close-up of the fabric and collar area, with maybe a view of the lining - the problem is these came in and out of fashion a few times - I suspect this is late 70s, but it might be older...

Hi,

I recall something very similar circa 1972, as far as the fabric pattern and frog closures. But as Jonathan has said, a shot of the fabric close up and the lining will give more clues. Is there any structure to the shoulder area or is it just your dress form underneath?

Yes, the pattern of the fabric and the frogs look "very" circa 72-ish, but as Jonathan said, this sort of cape has been in and out of fashion many times. There is something about the shoulder line that does look a little later.... I agree with Barbara & Jonathan about seeing more of the details.

What fiber is the fabric? I can't tell from the photo, but that might be a good clue in dating this, along with the lining.

Hey everyone! Thanks for the tips! Sorry it's delayed, but here are a few photos of the fabric/shoulders. I can't tell what the fabric is....it's a knit with a smooth feel. As far as the shoulders go, there is a slight shoulder pad built in between the outer layer and lining, but the shoulder pads don't feel super rigid.

Nicole, I'm not sure if it's polyester double knit...I know it FEELS like polyester...and is definitely woven, but that's the extent of my knowledge. Thanks everyone for your help...you're AWESOME!
