Help With Vintage Hermes Striped Gloves/Scarf?

H!!

I found this Hermes striped set recently. While I've seen the gloves, I've never seen the tie or scarf. I can't find any info on it.

I have a second question that may be less than smart but here goes... The tie has some spots/soil and I'm wondering if I could hand wash it without destroying it.

The inside label says TWOPLEX SUEDE (which I've never heard of).

I thank you in advance for your help and your knowledge: )

Very sweet! There was no image accompanying this 1952 article, but the description sounds like your set: "Perkiest gloves seen in a while are the candy-striped ones designed in Paris by Hermes and manufactured in New York...They're neat classic shorties of a suede-like cotton with hand-finished outside seaming...in white with red line. Some will wear the gloves, some will don the ascot to match...range from sizes 6 to 7.5., $4.50"

I have hand washed vintage "suede" cotton gloves. I have been unable to get them perfectly flat again. I think, because of the label, best have the ascot, or whole set, done by a dry cleaner you trust. I'm sure others are handier with a low-setting iron than I am. Just a warning from personal experience, and I am very daring with hand washing since my two trusted cleaners have closed!

I assume your ascot is not made of the same material as the gloves, but just in case...vintage ads from the same era as your set all note that twoplex suede is washable, although they don't specify exactly how to wash the gloves.

One 1926 article noted: "In the glove department I bought a pair of TWOPLEX Suedes...the sales girl explained to me that the 'TWOPLEX' meant woven of two threads instead of one, making the glove heavier in quality and warmer..."

Hi Lynne~

I just looked at the set again. They feel the same to me.

For some reason, I seem to be more apprehensive about the ascot.

I really appreciate your info and for taking the time to share your knowledge with me.
