Hey,

Sometimes I have items that I need some help with. I recently came across a YSL vintage brim hat with a brightly colored tortoise shell pattern. I cannot seem to find anyone who know's of the circa, value, or rarity. I have found another hat like this one online and my appraiser was not certain either. She is educated, so I found this to be daunting.

Any help?

Thanks!

Emily

Hi,

Cool hat! Sorry to say it is not a scarce YSL, I actually have come across 6 or more of this same hat over the past 10 years, sometimes in that color, sometimes in another colorway of blues and greens. While I have not researched the exact year, my educated guesstimate is late 1960s to possibly very early 1970s. It is not couture millinery, but is a nice hat made of quality fur-felt, and would have been sold in a high end department store or stand alone millinery shop.

In my professional opinion, YSL hats are not fetching high prices right now in most online markets, unless it is an unusual style or a one-off or from his couture line. Despite what some price books may say, those hats just have not caught on with collectors, who usually have 1 or 2 representative hats in their collection and then stop purchasing them. Someone who buys this will either be a new collector who may not pay a high price, or if you get lucky a young woman who loves the style and colors will purchase it to wear for herself.

I find it interesting that you know a hat appraiser, as there are very very few of us around. Where are you located?

Thank You so much for the info!

I am located in Sarasota, Florida. My appraiser is NOT specialized in hats, although she has a strong collection and has been in the vintage business for over twenty years. She did state the correct era (sixties), but knew nothing in terms of price..ect. I found a similar YSL hat on Ebay going for around $200, but I thought maybe that was a high price? I needed more info.....

I do not sell many hats online due to the reason that they are usually reserved for particular lovers or collectors and can be difficult to sell. Also, I can never seem to find appraisers who know much about hats in general...(you are correct!). I just loved the colors on this one though....so beautiful! I had to snatch it up!

Much Thanks!

Emily
