Hi, I would like to know if the beads on this hat are black jet. Also, there is a label like the one this hat has in the label resource section which is from the early 60s and the pillbox style is fitting for the time period. This hat looks like it is a pillbox turban mix though which makes me unsure on the age and what I should title the hat.

Any thoughts appreciated.

A 1966 article about the hats of Irene Stone (a.k.a. Irene of New York) featured her 'chignon caps' and 'dome' hats. The dome hat somewhat resembles your hat in size and general shape, although the one pictured was made of straw. It sat a bit back on the head.

The article added that the milliner had a less expensive Rivera line that started at $25.

Because this label was from a less expensive line, the beads are likely to be plastic. Click one against your teeth. It will have a dull sound and feel, quite different from glass or stone.
Jet is an organic material related to coal and was used a great deal at the turn of the century for buttons for mourning clothes. Sometimes somewhat shiny black beads are referred to as jet black color, but the material they are made of is something else.

Hi Marian, I actually took a needle, made it hot, and touched an inconspicuous place of one of the beads and it made a little spot where the needle point touched so I believe the beads are plastic. Thank you, Caryn
