History/ Origin of Faggotting

I am looking for information as to when and where hand faggotting began, became popular, etc. to include in an article on replicating hand faggotting by machine.

I suspect it was done for the practical purpose of joining two narrow or small pieces of cloth together, as in a table cloth for a large table. I also suspect that the stitch was part of the embroidery/lace movement of the early 17th century. I don't know for sure but I would put money on it becoming popular in the early 17th century Western Europe.
