Holt Renfrew coat - ?s

Superfine wool and cashmere Holt Renfrew coat with corde buttons, padded shoulders. It reminds me of something YSL might have done, Russian influence et al. I'm thinking early 80s - what say you?

Thanks!

Now here's where I beg to differ, because I think it's late '80s-early '90s. That princess line had a popular re-emergence then - I loved it and bought several pieces in '90-91.

Hmmm, it's looking alot like some of my 90s stuff, that I'm torn as to weather it's late 80s or early 90s - but I know those kind of buttons were popular in the late 80s and early 90s.

Is the fur fake? If it is, I've found the 80s fake fur pulls out easier than the 90s stuff (so grab a few and tug gently), also the 80s fake fur isn't as soft as the 90s stuff (I'm canadian lol I know nothing about bathing suits, but I know my winter gear lol!) - if it's real fur, idk :) Lovely coat though.

Thanks, coffeegrl! And hello fellow Cannuck.

Someone else u2ud me and feels 83 to 86 ish.

I remembered too I had a early 90s Holt coat in plum a while back and, although maxi, the cut was similar to this but the sweep was less generous.

Interesting note about fake furs. It's been my experience that 70s fakes don't live up to those of the 80s. And two 80s fake fur coats in particular (European made) were much softer than those I'm seeing (feeling) being made today.

Thanks, Karin.

Nice area to go to school in - HR, museum, Ritz, McGill et al.

Holt Renfrew is the equivalent of Saks. They sell many name brands as well as their own house brand. In the 60s and 70s they had agreements with the House of Dior, YSL etc to sell knock offs - still pricey, mind you - you can see a pic of a Holt, YSL knock off that I sold a while back here: themerchantsofvintage.com

And here's a hand painted 70s sweater that they had made exclusively for them:

Deborah - yes it was! It was in the Globe Building on Sherbrooke, literally between the art museum and Holt Renfrew. I only ever saw designer label stuff in their shop windows, that's why I presumed that's what they sell.
The original dress of your YSL knock-off was actually on show at the YSL exhibition last autumn (I saw it on it's last day!). Anyway, I've learned something again - and I know I'll go to Montreal again, I love it so much :hiya:. And you never know what I might find... I've made some very lucky vintage finds in Montreal so far.

Hi! Yay! I love "bumping into" fellow Canadians :)

So maybe my fake furs that I thought were 80s are 70s then, and the stuff I think is 90s is actually 80s? - darn it! lol Guess I'm not as smart as I thought hey ;) Actually now that you mention it, I have a FAB fake fur from the 80s that is SUPER soft - but I've seen some that totally had the 80s style that were just yuck, not soft at all...Maybe those were actually 90s...hmmm oh well :) It's a great coat you have either way!
