I'm posting this as a separate thread so it doesn't get "lost," but there was a discussion on dating over the last few days in which hook-and-eye tape was mentioned as a possible clue to dating. Nobody seemed to have a definite idea of how long it's been around.
I wrote to Yale Hook and Eye over the weekend, and received this kind and informative response just now:
So this is another bit of info to be added to the collective history of fashion and clues to dating!

Hello Anne,
Thanks for your inquiry. Our company history does date back to 1914, when my grandfather, Leo Roseman (then known as Leo Rosenman), invented the method to automatically sew hooks and eyes to tape. Before his invention, hooks and eyes were riveted to tape, or were hand sewn to the garments. I don't know when riveted hook and eye tape was created, but I believe it existed in the late 1800's.
Of course, if you or any of your fellow costumers ever need some hook and eye tape, please contact us - we'd be happy to work with you.
Best regards,
Ann Roseman
