I found this in small thrift store and there is a Horrockses label, but not Horrockses Fashion.
Some similar item on ebay and Etsy is described like an antique.
I hope you can help with dating !

Hi, you can read more about Horrockses in our Label resource here.
They were a cotton manufacturer before Horrockses fashions began in 1946 so as your label suggests, the cloth was made by Horrockses, the blouse by somebody else.
Can you post photos of the whole garment? and of any details that may help us to date it. Does it have any other labels?

Have a look at the stitching of the hem - it may be a bed jacket of some sort but it looks awfully like a nightdress that has been shortened to me.

If we can date this, this would be a great one to include in our label resource.

Agree it could have been shortened.

Are there buttons and button holes behind the placket? Does it open all the way to the hem - it looks as though it's open for a few buttons and then closed, which I've seen on antique nightdresses, and would rule out it being a bed jacket or a blouse I think. Is that a tie of some kind at the back?

- Yes, there are buttons behind the placket, only one button, the upper button is visible, another two are hidden. The bottom edge of the "blouse" is closed, sewn up. So - three buttons, one visible, two hidden and closed bottom edge. And yes, there is a tie at the back, sorry, that I did not mention it before.

Hmm, then which period it can be ?

I would be very glad to add the label to Laber resource. Do you have some instructions for label photo (size for example)

Aha! My specialist topic : ) First off Horrockses were producing cotton as Horrockses crewsdon and co from 1791 onwards. In the early 20th c their label varied quite a lot, although I think (if memory serves me correctly) this would equate to a late 20s early 30s item. This is very typical of their early 20th century production- most of what you see of Horrockses in this perios is plain cottons for undergarments/ night garments. In the early 1940s just before the Horrockses fashions subsidiary was set up they were mostly using a black on white label (I have a nice cc41 example of this).

Hope that helps : )

Great information Advantage - thank you!

I love Horrockses - wish I'd kept all the pretty cotton florals I've sold, but never mind.

I was going to say that many people think these nightgowns were Victorian or Edwardian but the styles continue into the '20s and '30s so I agree with your dating. I think this one is '20s-early 30s too.
