How do I use this?

Hello,
I recently purchased this item. It was sold to me as a “Victorian Ribbon Belt Buckle”. I love its simple, yet elegant design, and as a vintage belt buckle lover I just had to get it! The only problem is that I can’t find any information on it (even through google image search), so I actually have no idea how to wear it

I actually found this forum site while doing some google sleuthing, and read a thread where someone had posted something kinda similar and it ended up being a decorative hat buckle instead of a true buckle. However, the item in that thread had its prongs pointed inward and didn’t have a backing/cover. My item’s prongs are facing outward and have a cover.

(I don’t need it to secure like a true belt, just liked it as a decorative waist belt kinda thing.)

It looks to me as if you open it as shown in the last photo and lay your belt/ribbon/sash between the top and bottom and then clamp it closed, with the prongs piercing the fabric to hold it in place as you snap it shut again?

I have tried this, the bottom prongs don’t really seem to hold anything very securely… I can get one end of the ribbon pretty secure around a single end of ribbon, but the other side will unhook/slip out very easily

The other end of the belt needs eyelets. Since your belt has 4 prongs, you need at least one vertical row of 4 eyelets. If you want the fit of the belt to be adjustable, you need several vertical rows. If you don't sew, ask a friend or prof. who does alterations to make the belt for you. It can be ribbon or fabric.
