So, I happened upon this piano shawl - the first time I have ever purchased one. It was simply labeled as an antique. Are there any telltale clues that I can look for to figure out just how old it is? TIA
I agree it is not antique, and I would also say about 1950 or 1960, probably made for the tourist trade. It is not really what I think of as a piano shawl, it is more of a fringed tapestry for hanging on a wall or over a couch, etc.
It looks like it is a souvenir from Seville, Spain. The church tower is the Giralda, the tower of Seville's cathedral (just google pictures). They built the cathedral in place of a moorish mosque after the Reconquista, and the Giralda was once the mosque's minaret. One can actually climb up to the top of the Giralda, the view from there over the city is stunning - I've done it . The flamenco dancer motif also fits in well with the Andalucian theme.
That said could someone answer the original ? of how to tell a real piano shawl? Is it mainly by size? I know how to tell old vs new tapestry but there are some exquisite piano shawls. Thanks. Sandy
