How old is this peignoir?

Hello friends,

Any advice for me on dating this rayon peignoir with satin ribbon straps and trim? I love the tiny shoulder pads.

Will post a few photos (have lots more... just ask).

Hi - Quick update. Sent photos and description to my lingerie friend (all she does, and has done for a long time now, is vintage lingerie), at the same time that I originally posted this. She just got back to me with "Mid-30s to early 40s -- not before or after." So that's interesting, no?

As for the fabric, Mary Jane, I can definitely see what you mean in the photos, but I would not describe it as chiffon. It's more like a georgette, in that it has some weight and texture to it. It's less floaty than chiffon. Of course, that's my technical term ; )...

i respectfully disagree with your friend. in the late 30s and early 40s, the style for nightgowns was still that bias cut evening gownish look. not sheer like this.

the buttons on the robe and the large ribbon bows also say later to me. i think i'd agree with late 40s. the style is also very much like early 50s.

I agree with Joan, that the late '30s to early '40s styles were different. Your friend might be looking at the basque waist, that was popular in dresses of that time, but you see it in lingerie right through the '40s and '50s, even up to the early '60s. I would place your peignor in the '50s were it not for the shoulder pads, that place it firmly in the '40s, so I stick with my late '40s dating.

The illusion lace overlaid with georgette is also a late '40s-50s technique. I like the idea that your peignor might be silk georgette, perhaps try a burn test?

Nicole
