How to clean 30s/40s handbag

I just picked up a cute little black suede handbag. At least I think it's suede. Gold stamped marking reads: Made in Spain Bolsos Pefia MALGRAT.

I put it away and then I came to the computer and noticed my keyboard was getting black. I looked at my hands and they were entirely black - from the above purse I had just put away. I quickly went and wrapped it in acid free paper, but I'd like to know it this has ever happened to anyone and if so what did you do? In the meantime, I get out the vaccuum and see what that does.

THANKS!!

Aha! I think you may have something there, Chris - it's hot and sticky here in Montreal and perhaps my hands were clammy and wet. The purse is dry though. Have to run out, but will try and vaccuum later, as I just touched it with dry hands and it is still shedding - for lack of a better term.

Okay...so its "shedding"...i thought you meant that the dye was coming off and your hands were black like you got ink on them rather than bits of purse

Hi Deborah,

You have an antelope suede purse there!

I have had many of these and the gloves and they all do the same thing....I have yet to figure out what to do about these.
I have quite a few now but I'm afraid to sell them as I don't think the client will be too happy. I made the mistake of using one of these many years ago to a wedding with a pale gray dress...not a good idea.

I do hope someone has a solution here!

The dust is superfine it's like ink - but more akin to dry ink for photocopiers, Chirs. Vacuuming has not resolved the issue.

Yeah! Thanks, Mary Jane! Trust your gray dress survived after a cleaning.
