How to clean a 1960s wool greatcoat?

I have a dark green-grey wool greatcoat, identified as a 1960s West German Border Guard (BGS) coat. Outer is wool, with a darker laden green collar. Buttons are original aluminium, pockets and sleeve lining looks like gaberdine. It’s in amazing condition aside from some small mystery stains/residue. What would people recommend in terms of cleaning?

Thanks,
Katie

Katie, I would have it dry cleaned. You may be able to remove a few spots with something like Whink Instant Spot Remover, but it seems like it could do with a cleaning.

It sounds like a wonderful quality coat!

I have found that older woolen uniforms dry clean beautifully. You might want to check about leaving the buttons on while it is being cleaned.
