How to Clean silk chiffon lined ribbon enesemble

Hi everyone.
I have a 3 piece ensemble - mink trimmed coat, top and skirt - covered entirely in ribbon. It's lined in silk (i think) chiffon and it is FILTHY. I know the dry cleaner won't do much good. I didn't invest too much so I am willing to be a bit more risky but I have no idea where to begin.

I am going to remove the mink collar and I was think of a quick soak with Eucalan?

What do you recommend?

I've had bad experiences with silk chiffon so don't like to wash it now, it seems to like shrinking.

Perhaps start with hanging it out in the shade and see if the dust can be encouraged to leave? When you say "filthy", what sort of filthy are we talking about? I agree that dry cleaners aren't much chop in this department but silks can be hard to wash.

Then again, if you have nothing to lose, perhaps if you wash it gently in a mild detergent and see how you go? I wouldn't soak until I've tried and failed other methods, soaking silk can also be bad.

Eucalan sounds mighty intriquing, Sandra--thanks for the link!

I've been finding dry cleaners to be of very limited usefulness. Sometimes vintage wounded birds I give them come back in exactly the same condition they left in (and sometimes it's even worse--ie one cleaner recently treated collar yellowing so aggressively on a 50s silk jacket that the silk was eaten through...), and the cleaning can cost more than the garment did!

You don't seem to have much confidence a dry cleaner will improve things, and say you didn't spend a lot on the set, so maybe it's worth a try. Maybe start with the piece that seems most straightforward to deal with (the top?)...

Nicole - the soiling is a yellowish color. Could be urine, tea, age, who knows. i'm confident my dry cleaner won't be able to get it out. I've seen some members have great luck with some pretty soiled items being sent to the cleaners. Gut tells me it will be pointless.

Carrie - I actually haven't used this stuff before but bought it after Mary Kincaid of Zuburbia recommended it to me. She seems to like it.

Mary Jane - glad to hear you have had luck with Eucalan. i think I am going to give it a go.

I'll keep you guys posted!
