How to store my 1959 dress?

Hi all, I recently bought this lovely silk dress at an auction, and I've never intentionally bought something so old and fancy before. I want to make sure it's in the best condition and I can get the most possible use out of it that I can (I fully intend to wear it and am praying it fits me). What would be the best way to store this dress? it is made of silk organza.

am also wondering what the best way to clean it would be-- I was thinking of using retroclean (since its worked wonders on my vintage white garments) and finding someone with a bathtub where I could soak and wash the garment since I only have a shower or washing machine.

Congratulations on acquiring such a lovely piece! I'll kick it off with what may be some obvious suggestions: do NOT use wire hangers, as these can damage delicate items, and beware of soaking if there is any sign of weak seams, which may be a sign that the thread is rotting. Also: don't use plastic film to cover the dress, as it can trap moisture and cause problems. If you want to protect the dress from dust, etc., use a light cloth cover instead.

As to how best to clean this, I personally would take it to a professional, especially if you've invested a lot in it! Others may have different thoughts about this, though.

This dress might be a gateway drug! Mine was a full beaded cashmere cardigan thrifted when I was a sophomore in college.... in 1970.
Vintorious has given you some good advice. I do sometimes hand wash silks, but not if there are facings or linings made from different fabrics. A facing that shrinks or twists a bit during washing can be disastrous.

Honestly, I would professionally clean. Sometimes the cleaner can uncover issues you did not previously see. Plus you don't know if the color will bleed once it sits in water.

Retroclean or Oxi Clean can be very harsh on silk of this age. If you feel like tackling it yourself, I would start off with a much less abrasive treatment like Dawn dish liquid or spot clean with a white vinegar/water mix then use baking soda to absorb any excess (and hopefully the stain too).

On a whole other note, beer cooler chests are great to securely soak a garment. Just don't use one that has exposed metal on the interior.

Someone else might have better ideas. Good luck, it is a beautiful piece!
