The smell is more of a musty, odor, it's been stored for a while, thank you for your input! This is a tough one...as trying to remove these may leave even more marking. Is the smell from perspiration or just an overall musty odor? You could try airing it out if it is an overall odor. I know I had a lovely 1930s velvet gown once that was an off white color, in the end I put it into the washing machine on a hand wash cycle, I had applied some stain removal detergent onto the actual stains and put it in to wash.
My thinking was if the dress was sold in the condition it was in, I would only have been able to ask about $35, if I got the stains out I was talking about $150, so I gave it a chance and it worked and I sold it.
I cannot be sure this will work out for your piece as mine did not have a lining and also was an off-white color. Just sharing what I did one time with a 1930s velvet piece. Your lining could shrink some if you wash it.
Thank you! Me too! It's so stunning!Such a pretty piece. I hope you get the stains out!!
