How to tell leather type?

I've got a red leather bucket bag that feels like lambskin. There is no tag in it that indicates "Lamb". Is there any way to make sure - or could I take it to a furrier or cobbler? Here are some close-ups of the texture. Frankly, in the photos it looks like almost any smooth leather - but it is so soft it melts in you hand-

It's difficult to describe the difference in words, but " so soft it melts in your hand" is pretty close. Generally lambskin is much thinner than calf leather, which makes it almost as pliable as fabric. It's much softer, and the sueded side feels velvety. If you have ever buffed a car with real chamois, that's lambskin.

nearly all 'generic' letaher gods are cow/calfskin...if it any other, I always understood through the trade, traders had to actually tell us, it had to be stamped too...dont know if things have changed much since my day.

But those 80s mock chanel bags were standard leather..
