How to tie the waist of my new skirt?

I bought this the other day for myself to wear this winter. It's a bit big so I'll probably take it in a bit - I'm also trying to work out how the suede thonging tied originally?

There are only two (long) strips of suede, but three eyelets on each side. Any ideas? It is sewn up internally on one side so you can't thread the thong though the eyelet and out again 'underneath' that side, if that makes sense.. it can only come out of one of the holes on that side.

Do you think it would be corset style?

Trouble is I can't make it do it due to the central section being stitched up on one side. I know it's hard to explain - almost like someone stitched one side of your sneaker to the tongue. Maybe I should unpick it, but it looks pretty original.

I think it looks like someone has altered a small skirt into a large one....and added that whole centre panel in teal suede. If that's the case, it's possible that the eyelets have been added too? It's hard to know what's going on without seeing it but it doesn't look very original as it is.

You could well be right Nicole - I haven't looked inside it but it is all a bit piecemeal! What I don't get is if they added the eyelets to expand the waist why did they not make it possible to lace it how I want to lace it, lol! All very inconsiderate :)

Anyway, I have decided to unpick that section of stitching and re-do the waistband to fit me at the same time. Thanks for your help everyone!

I love seeing how inventive people get when they love something and are determined to make it fit at any price...the spirit of resourcefullness is amazing.

Often, as long as they haven't cut the fabric, I'll reconstruct it as they don't usually sit well, especially if you're not the same size.

The good news is that when they've been mucked with, it gives you a licence to do what you like with them so I say, go to town!
