I am trying to be more specific in my dating! Opinions?

I am trying to pin things down a little more accurately, but am still very cautious!

I'm dating this to around 1955, with the dropped, fitted waist and hip details. Any one like to comment/correct me? :D

It has a central (concealed) back zip, and was custom made. Skirt should or could be fuller, no nets used in photo. Previous owner claimed 1940s but I am inclined to go with a later date.... sorry quick snaps not great (clipped hastily to fit) :puzzled:

I'm clueless when it comes to dating, but sure is perdy!

Harriet, it's lovely!!! I'm not anywhere near as good at dating as you are, but it "feels" earlier 50's to me--maybe 55 as an outside (?), but I'd place it into the very early 50's. JMHO, as always!

"I'm not anywhere near as good at dating as you are"...

I think you're confusing me with someone else, LOL! I really don't know for sure, I keep changing my mind... maybe it is a few years before. It's the skirt length too that I thought might make it more mid fifties. I have to be honest and say I never really try and be that exacting - I just thought it would be an inetresting experiment to see how close I could get! :D

Hopefully one of these days it will come to me in a flash as I'm sure it does to the more experienced here, but for now I'll keep on sitting with a pile of reference books and pictures close at hand....

Its not after 1956, you are quite right that those fitted drop waist styles are very popular in the mid 1950s, but they do date back to the mid 1940s. However, the length looks right for post 1954 unless it was shortened, which happens often. I don't know if that's anymore specific for you.

Jonathan has a good point about garments being shortened. With ready-to-wear fashions, I think exact dating is challenging -- especially with fashions that repeat in subsequent seasons. With the dress pictured, I would concur mid-1950s. The dress fabric and detailing look more 50s than 40s to me. Hope that helps-it's a lovely dress.

Thank you both! No it hasn't been shortened, so to know that I was in the right area is a real first for me!

Yes, I suppose it is difficult as well if items have been made by a seamstress for a specific individual, as you don't know how long after a specific fashion 'appears' that someone decides it's the thing they must have!
