I got a new dress!

Went to the antique center near me and spotted some rolled up fabric high up on a wardrobe covered in dust. Pulled it down and discovered it was a dress from the late 50's. With my height, it's hard for me to find things that are proportioned for my height AND still fit my measurements but this suspiciously looked like it would fit me.
Got it home, and voila! It fits like it was made for me! The shoulders aren't too broad and the bust fits my shape like it's supposed too (narrow across the back and full in front). Alot of the things I find that fit a 41"- 42" bust, tend to have 34" or 36" waists but this has the 31" waist that I need and isn't too big in the ribs either.

Someone 50 years ago was my exact shape and now i have her dress to enjoy! I'm SO HAPPY as I hardly ever find anything that fits me nicely!!:bouncing:

I have two crinolines underneath it (LOL, that I was SUPPOSED to sell!) to hold out the skirt and I think I may need to pull out a vintage bullet bra from stock to wear with it as my modern padded bra doesn't give the pointiness that the bust on the dress needs.

Ok, off to wash it now as it's all dusty but the next time you see this, i'll be wearing it to the Edwin's Oxford vintage show!

Thanks Jonathan! :D
Yup, have lost some more weight (I'm 178 now down from 225 in November 2004) although this week I put a few pounds as it was Easter. I can't DENY myself chocolate :horny:

I'm never going to be stick thin but according to a 1890's book that my aunt has and from a 50's weight scale I came across in a museum this weekend, 160 pounds is the healthy weight for a woman of 5'9" so that is where I'm heading. That is alot more than what modern weight charts give for 5'9" but I'm sticking with the "vintage" ideal weight as people back then had a more realistic body image than what we have now.

I love the dress! It looks perfect on you...never sell it!

Hmm...where can this 50's weight scale be looked up? I am curious as to what it says I should weigh for my height lol.

Wow, Lei, that dress looks fantastic on you and you look great. Tell Jake he did a good job, too.:)

As a related aside. We just rented Mrs. Henderson Presents, which I really enjoyed. In the features section of the DVD about casting they said they were looking for young women to play the dancers and singers in the movie who were not gym sculpted and stick-insect thin but rather thin by the ideals of the 1930s/1940s which is heavier than our unrealistic ideals of what thin is today. They all had hips and bosoms, and thighs, liks those you see on the chorus girls of Buzby Berkley movies from the era. It was quite refreshing! Personally, I think the unrealistic ideals of what is the right weight today encourages not only anorexia and bulemia but also overweight issues because its too hard to attain and maintian and people give up. I always look at those 'ideal' weight charts for men my height and add 20 pounds to it as a realistic weight for myself. People forget that in the 1960s Twiggy was considered 'skinny' and underweight, now they just think that is what normal should be!

Ah shucks guys, thanks for the compliments:BAGUSE:

According to the modern weight charts, I should be in the 125- 148 lbs weight range which is WAY too small for me and I'm not even large boned. I have a pic taken in the late 70's of my mum at 125lbs. She's the same height and body shape as me but she looks so boney and horrible in the photo, it's scarey. No offense to anyone here who is that weight and height but I don't even want to be that thin as it doesn't suit me at all.

Chris, that scale was at the Coventry Museum of Transport in the World War Two section for some bizarre reason. We will go back as Gary liked it there (I found looking at cars a bit boring:P ) and when we do, I'll take a close up shot of the chart and post it.

LOL, I've trained Jake well to take photos, haven't I? :D
