looks like it has a really small shoulder set on it? tiny size then?

You have to be really careful dating classic tweed coats manufactured in Scotland or the UK for that matter. This style of coat was popular right up until the 90's and probably a very similar style is being made today. Here is a link to a similar coat showing the same tweed, same label and being dated as 1950's. Which do you think looks the earlier coat?

Identifying the label is even a bit tricky because the font used for Harris Tweed is, I think still in use. The lining and any construction fabric or padding might help to date this coat. Is there a back vent?

I lived close to the Scottish borders and I saw this style of coat being worn all the time by older women.

The two coats are very similar but the one above has unusually round shoulders - there aren't many times that rounded shoulders were in fashion and the early to mid '60s was one of them.

You're right though: many older ladies still wear older coats. The styles don't change very much at the conservative end of things. I'm inclined to think of the one you've linked as earlier (and it looks more '50s to me) but the similarity and fabric are noticeable. There's also a similar label in the label resource that came from a '50s coat.

Harris Tweeds are still being made - the labels are provided to manufacturers who make up the tweed into styles.

I have a Harris Tweed in almost the identical colors/pattern, with the same style label, but I have put mine at late 60s to early 70s because it is slightly more fitted and has the larger, wider lapels. So, I would also put yours at the early 60s, mid 60s at the latest. It doesn't quite give me a 50's feeling.... Those buttons were common in the 60s, especially on men's coats (lots of MacGregor coats have 'em), whereas the 50's ladies' coats I have in stock usually have more decorative-style buttons. HTH!

Dear Maryalice
Thank you for your email. The label usually allows me to find out when and who for the harris tweed in the garment was woven. If you are wanting a garment dated please send me a photo of the harris tweed label involved.
Regards
Mary Macdonald
