Other things to look for - Snap or button closures on dresses (usually on the SIDE) and skirts. Also, items with high quality hand stitching & interior details (bra & waist stays. Boning, etc)

I think if you could find some vintage magazines or catalogs (like on eBay) and familarize yourself with vintage of different eras, it would be helpful. I can spot vintage a mile away but been doing it for several years now

Yes, the resource book guide on VFG is fabulous. I'm sitting here with half a dozen I ordered from the library that were recommended and quite rightly so.
