I think it’s an odd modern dress

I found this sort of weird dress at the thrift shop. My grandmother loves it but it didn’t fit. I’m almost certain it’s a piece made recently but it’s not common enough of a style that I am sure. Maybe a mother or grandmother of the bride piece? My 81 year old grandmother didn’t remember it as a style either. On top of that the only tag in it is a very small one with M for medium (one of the reasons I think it’s modern). Another reason is because underneath the checked outer layer is a very stretchy, shiny material. There is a big bow on the shoulder with this weird sash piece that i assume the sleeve goes through. It’s sewn together at the bottom. Is this a remake of a style that was used in the past? Or just a weird modern style? I’ve tried reverse image searching and such and I can’t find anything else that has the sash that connects under the arm. The ones I found all looked more like a scarf. It is a lilac color. I’m sure this is a ridiculous question so I apologize in advance. I am dabbling in buying and reselling “vintage” (80s and 90s) pieces as a hobby and creative outlet. I have a phd in a science discipline so I loooove research, but I can’t figure it out. I even tried checking to see if it was in style in non-European countries as this thrift shop has a lot of clothes that fall in that category. Anyway, I’ve gone on too long.

Cheers!

Thanks, Donna! Glad I was on the right track.

Hugh, really interesting point. Perhaps odd was not the best choice of word since it has sort of a negative connotation. I meant it to mean “different from what is usual or expected.” I think it’s the bow and arm piece that made me think this. The large bow gives off a formal vibe but the pattern on the lilac fabric seems more casual to me. Then, the arm piece was nothing I had seen before. Also, the pleating in that arm piece and big bow gave me an 80s vibe, but the pattern and silhouette seemed more 50s 60s. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

The look reminds me a bit of traditional Asian Indian wear, sort-of sari adjacent.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for the late reply. I came down with quite the respiratory virus and am still catching up on things.

It does not have side slits. I had that thought as well and did a deep on some of those Styles. It wasn’t quite like anything else I found, but does have a lot of stylistic similarities. I think that is the most likely answer. I really appreciate your help!
