So I waffle. Right off I thought 40s New Lookish, but Julie (damn good vintage) says she sees late 30s, which I then can see also, especially given the length and the puff sleeve (not padded, more sculpted). I do really lean 30s now but wanted to ask what you guys see and if you think its a coat, coat dress or part of an ensemble. Zips up front top to botton, all wool lined in crepe rayon. No label.

Thanks! Ang

I too can see late 30s. I'd like to see it paired with a red below the knee (30s length) narrow skirt.

arrrgggghhhh
It is driving me crazy, I know I had a scan of a 30's pattern with a long jacket like that over a long gown.

WIth the zipper and flared skirt I think it has to be a skating outfit. The use of Gingham is a bit unusual for pre war (outside of a house frock), so I am not sure how early I would go with it... I would think c. 1940ish on the nose. With white skates and a headband it would be very Sonja Henie-esque.

What type of zipper is it, metal? What are the seams like? pinked, serged? Okay, I just read what you said about it being a coat to an ensemble.

After looking at a some 30s patterns and drawings, I can see why they thought 30s, but their are some similiarities of the 40s. I say early 40s, and a coat to a skirt ensemble. I saw a drawing from 1940 that had a little puff in the sleeve as well. Here is a 1940 dress drawing, the sleeves are a puffy too.

I think this is a dress c 1942. It appears short but on a a woman who wasn't very tall it would be fashionable. Rationing had begun in the US. Checks and plaids were very popular and so were patriotic colours. The skirt also has a swing style and great for jitterbugging! I believe during this period Claire McCardell was designing sleeves which were puffed and did not have padding but which gave that great shoulder silhouette. As usual, I would love to see the construction and detail of the lining. It's a really good example.

My first thought was 1939-1940 skating outfit. I agree with Jonathan about the huge CF zipper and short, flared skirt being indicators.
