Identify Lillian Ann Coats' fabric

I found two Lilli Ann coats. I believe dark grey one is from 1950s and the blue one is 1960s?

I believe both of them are some type of wool?
Dark Grey's fabric feels smooth and soft. No buttons

Blue one is knitted material. It feels a bit rough and it is kind fuzzy.

Hi Jenny,
Your grey, black, and white Lilli Ann coat is a mohair wool fabric blend and it dates to the 50s. We do have the same label in our VFG label resource for a 46-47 Lilli Ann suit but your coat does date later into the 50s.

Your blue and white Lilli Ann coat dates somewhere between the early 60s up to about 64, it is a wool yarn fabric, and I defer to poppysvintageclothing regarding the weave.

Both are beautiful.

The gray coat is fabulous. The fabric looks to be in the category of a wool melton. The nap has been brushed to a longer length than most meltons, but this technique was popular at the time and I have seen this finishing technique on other 1950s woman's coats. If you wanted to get specific, you could call it a novelty melton. Melton is not actually a type of weave as it is a finishing technique done after the fabric has been woven.

I cannot tell if there is any mohair in there, but I might suspect there is not and it just looks that way from the combing/brushing done to the fibers. No way for us to be sure from just a photo.

I am not 100% sure it is melton, as I do not have it in hand to feel or inspect closer. If the long "nap" has been actually woven in (versus being brushed after weaving) then it would be referred to as a pile (not a nap). So it would not be a melton if the pile is woven in. I hope that makes sense the way I wrote it.

Interesting about the wool melton Barbara. Once upon a time I actually had a Lilli Ann 40s fit and flare coat that was the same colorway as this. I had never heard of wool melton but mine was a mohair wool blend. When supersizing the close up of this one I thought I saw the fine mohair fibers but if melton wool presents the same way this might be different than the mohair wool blend that I had.

Interesting...wool melton. Do you have a picture of the long nap/pile?
I can get a closer shoot of the coat and show it to you tomorrow.

I have had the same coat and a princess cut. You might want to doublecheck that the sleeves don't have cuffs. That is definitely wool. The picture of my Lilli Ann that I recently sold. Mine is definitely more 40s but it's pretty much almost the same material. Just a different cut than yours .

That one also looks close to one I used to have to and is really one that I would like to have back. :)
