Identifying Furs in Vintage Coats

While I have read through the guide here to furs & skins, I'd still like to ask for your opinions on identifying the types of fur used on these vintage pieces.

The first is a cape that dates to the 1950s. I'm thinking it's mink or possibly beaver; suggestions?

The second is a long coat that dates to the late 1960s, I'm guessing by the buttons (if not early 70s?). I don't know if it's tourmaline mink, or possibly fox, or???

I have one more cape from the 1960s that's a multi-patchwork mix of furs that I have not photographed yet, but will add to this thread.

Thanks so much for any and all of your expertise! I do have more photos of each piece, if needed to help identify.

Hi there, Pretty furs. Your first is a mink fur stole and your second is a belted mink fur coat from the early to mid 70s and the color does look like Tourmaline. If you post the other fur I will be happy to chime back in.

That's fabulous, Caryn. Thank you so much for your expertise! Very much appreciated.

I'm now attaching some photos of the patchwork cape from the 1960s that I mentioned... Any thoughts?

Many thanks, again.

You are most welcome.

This last piece you have shown is a very popular and desirable piece from the 70s.
Many have been made like this, they have been well liked, and will always be in style. I previously had a piece just like this and I have seen many others with pieces like this also.
It is a multicolored patchwork mink fur cape with raccoon fur trim, hidden belt slits within the fur, and a leather belt with raccoon fur pom poms at the ends.
Technically it is not the prime definition of a poncho but the keywords shawl, cape, and poncho could all be used to describe this because of it's shape and patchwork quilt like appearance.
Very nice. :)

Thank you, Caryn! Extremely helpful. I do particularly love the style of this one. I had assumed late 60s since I have a photo of the original owner in the cape and that's the era it seemed, but it could very well have been the early 1970s...and now based on your description, I'm assuming it must be. You've described this poncho/shawl/cape to a T! Thanks again, so much!
