If you could only have 5 pairs of shoes..

I got to thinking yesterday (darn me for doing it). There is a lot of wardrobe philosophies that state when buying a new item, think what else you have to go with it, or buy everything mix and match so you don't wind up with a lot of odds and ends you never wear.

Anyways, I was thinking, if I had to get rid of all of my shoes except 5 pairs, what would i keep? or more so, if i were buying from scratch what are the 5 pairs of shoes i would pick?

Here is the first two...i am still thinking about the rest..

- A strappy pair of shoes in a metallic (silver or gold) with very narrow straps and a heel, but a lower heel.
I think i would choose these because they seem to go with just about any evening dress or dressy suit of most eras if i am not going for authenticity. Also work well when going to a club (like i actually do that anymore) or a concert with slightly more casual clothes.

Patent leather loafers in a beige or camel a very menswear influence. Makes jeans look so much more pulled together. They look great with pant suits or even lighter colored skirt suits. Go great with certain mod dresses as well. I do have a pair like this and i think i wear them at least 3 days a week.

So if you could only have five pairs of shoes in your wardrobe (not collection), what would you pick?

Or does this question make you want to run away?

I have over 75 pairs of shoes in my closet and I can only have 5???

I'll start my list, and add to it too.

1. A pair of black knee boots, with about a 1.5" heel. Not clunky, but not spindly, toe not sharply pointed, but not square. Ferragamo made this boot 2 years ago (perhaps they still do) and why I didn't buy them when I had the chance.... oh, yes, the $450 price tag.

2. A pair of black Ferragamo Audrey's. I have these and could NOT live without them. The best flat maryjanes!

3. A pair of great walking shoes. I walk a lot. The best I've ever found, believe it or not, are Easy Spirits.

4. Sandals with a wedge heel, about an inch high, probably black.

5. A pair of Chanel t-strap pumps, bone with black toes. About a 2.5" heel

I have a pair of Easy Spirits too..they look like sneakers but they are black leather so i can get away with wearing them a lot easier. I also like my light blue rubber clogs. Wear them with cute outfits when it rains, wearthem in the garden...they are great.

1) walking shoes, currentl Timberland
2) black boots with some heel , but not too much - modified Western is good
3) black pumps with a good toe and a dressier heel - suede is good
4) black flats
5) camel flats

I actually have all these ,and I am amazed at how they cover my needs day to day. But nobody ever accused me of being a snappy dresser.

What I really want back is my ability to wear high heels, which has really faded. There were just t oo many years of concrete floors 8 hours a day.

Since I collect shoes then my 5 would be:
1) A pair of slap-sole shoes from the mid 17th century
b) A pair of very high heeled French brocade silk shoes from the early 18th century
c) Those beaded and embroidered shoes by Perugia that the Met bought for some ungodly sum of money a couple of months back -- I think it was $45,000. They had dancing couples embroidered on the vamps and dated from about 1919
d) One of the pairs of Yantorny shoes from Mrs. Liddig's trunk now stored at the Met from c. 1920....
e) and just for fun... a pair of Imelda Marcos' shoes

Great question! Well I know what I'd want, but unfortunately, an old toe injury keeps me from wearing what I'd really LIKE to.... This is what I CAN wear that I couldn't do without:

1) My Lady Saucony running/walking shoes/sneakers--I've had 2 pairs of these and have worn them both till they've fallen off my feet; most comfortable shoes I've ever had!

2) Black leather pumps or slingback pumps with about a 1 1/2" to 2" medium-sized heel, not skinny, not clunky, and slightly rounded toe.

3) Mary Jane-type flats with rounded toe & strap at instep (I'm wearing these to death as well)

4) Ankle-high leather "booties" for with leather or crepe soles

5) Dressy summer sandals, "strappy" in front, open at the back, and with a small heel--to wear with dresses or dressy slacks. I have a pair of Italian-made ones I got this summer, and despite my usual problem wearing any type of heel, these have one & are so comfortable. I wore them any time I had to dress up over the summer....

Hmmm, hard question as if I had my choice I would wear the high platforms and very high heels of my "youth" i.e. pre back problem days. But the discs in my spine say other wise so it's pratical non-pain shoes for me now!

Shoes I'd keep would be

1) My riding boots. Even though I can't ride like a used to because of my stupid back, they remind me of happy days and they give me hope that I will get back on a horse some day.

2) My paddock boots. Not just for riding, but I can walk miles in these!! The model I bought have really thick recycled rubber soles which just absorb every shock so my back is happy. They have taken me around miles of antique shows, walks and taken Jake riding. They not only look good with jods but look great with jeans too!

3) My late 1940's crocodile heels. Ok, not really practical as they have 4" heels but if I only wear them for special occasions and not for very long, I'm fine in them. These were a once in a lifetime find as they are my size (ok, well slightly too big but heel grips fix this) and they flatter the foot so much.

4) My ortho shoes from Clarkes. OK, they are pretty old lady looking (in fact, I have seen quite a few elderly ladies wearing them) but at least mine are black so they aren't too conspicuous. I got one size down so they don't make my feet look big either. They are so comfy and lovely for my back as they have rubber wedge soles and gel pad inner soles. Mmmm, heaven...

5) My mum's see-thru Lucite shoes from the 70's. Not really for wearing as they are one size too small and soooo narrow (why didn't I inherit her narrow feet?) but I would never sell them as they are my mum's and I remember her buying them in the shop when I was 4 years old. I even helped her choose the style too!

I only really wear three pairs (you'll think I'm a goober here) but they are:
A pair of super comfy cross trainer tennies/athletic shoes
My big butch leather steal toed garden boots
My clunky leather Dr. Martens sandals (well, not this month!)

and for dress-up:
My copper and black Doc creepers

I adore shoes, but don't fit in most (11 wide) and am as clutzy as a Jerry Lewis character, so I've only worn heels once since my wedding in '99...and that was to my sister's wedding!

Now, for looking at my list would be different!

I wear 8's, but I am the abnormally "tiny footed one" in the family. (they look huge due to my 5' stature and if i wear white loafers or sneakers which make them look like small yachts. so i never wear em) All of my female relatives on my mom's side average a size 10, and my grandmother is a 10.5W. My great aunt told me during the depression she wore her father's boots when he wasn't wearing them as that was the only thing that fit her!
