I\'m bound to get one right!?!

So far I have been close on my last guesses but all wrong lol....so again I try,,, this one has metal side zip... home made i assume as thre are no tags. Pretty good quality. I htought it was poly, but burn test say cotton. no doubt about it after burn! but because side metal zipper, but i know if its homemade that means nothing.i was hoping I acquired and eraly 50's dress,, but my eye tends to drift towards the 60s and 70s.... so I want to say 50s in my head but gut says mid 60s,... so mid 60s final answer.... now I await the professionals to give me the correct answer... I am learning the best way I can.. Im on week two so be gentel with me lol!!!!

THANK YOU for your time and response

Eek, I don't know! If you are sure you got a cotton reading from a burn test, I would revisit the possibility of rayon. The side metal zipper, the overall look...I'm guessing 40s.

We're always gentle~! :USING:

burn test

I know I was so shocked with burn test too.... ... but this is the notes that I wrote down,, minimal white/grey smoke, ignites easy, nice wood smell, i love this smell, lingering glow after flame before burning out, soft light grey ash that blew away with me jst examining it. clean edge left on frabric from burn. went out when reached scissors.....

So thats what I wrote down when I burned it. then I looked up burn tests again so as not to be as bias... I guess it could be rayon or mix, but just seemed so much like cotton on the burn but not the actual feel....the shimmer look to it is just the slip showing throughon the mannequin with the flash...

Your burn notes are great! Cotton and rayon are quite similar in a burn...soft grey ash and odor of burning paper. The look of the dress is just very "rayon" from experience.

Thank you

Awesome I wil take your word for it,... because I really was shocked with cotton and did not feel lile cotton and I read that they are close. And perhaps it has been treated, which messes with the burn tests also....

I am glad though because this is my first rayon piece and I am really trying to learn. and in all honesty in my heart I was like ohh 40's-50s when I bought it.. but I have been so wrong and second guessing myself,,, everything i think is older(40s 50s) is really 60's and 7os,, and even 80s lol... so I guessed higher based on my trend... but this makes me feel a little better.. I feel like I am getting the hang of it.. and I hope so because I am really trying!

so thank you for your time! :-)

Jennifer, you're doing great! I've been collecting for almost thirty years, and yet almost every garment teaches me something I didn't know yet.

I think your dress is a rayon lace, with a rayon taffeta lining, and probably '50s. They did use cotton laces during this time, but they're heavier: yours looks quite fine. I think the bow was added during the '80s when they were fashionable so I would unpick as I think it detracts.

Yes, the bow was bothering me! I would also suggest re-taking the photos with the lace neckline fixed. Right now the lace on our right is tucked under, and doesn't show the nice scalloping.

Jennifer....since Maggie opened the door of suggestion, I will make one, as well. Don't try to photograph a black dress against a white background. You are ending up with a silhouette and your camera is having some focus issues. Try a light gray or mid toned solid background, or perhaps go buy a bit of dollar bin fabric from the craft store/walmart in a neutral gray, dull light blue or something close to that. The meter on your camera will pick the blacks up easier if its not adjusting for the white of the door.

Very pretty dress! Agree with the others on fabric (rayon) and age. And I also second the idea to use a different color backdrop for shooting black items. The best photo backdrop I've ever used was a pale dull blue bed sheet I got at the Salvation Army for $2!!!! We moved last year and for the life of me, I can't find it. But you can shoot almost any other color on pale dull blue. Several professional photographers I've worked with use the blue, or sometimes light grey, as Jenn points out. But blue seems to be the first backdrop they use, then switch if they want a different look.

Thanks, I was actually going to put one up lol and it would be light blue, as my husband is in the Navy and we have plenty of military sheets... But I just moved my stuff into the office to make it my work area... and I just wanted to know on this one so badly... I am really in search of 40-50s clothing and I am trying to get the eye for it. I have not been too sucessfull but....I'm getting there. I took the bow off last night.. yes as soon as i pulled at it I could tell it was loosely added on... It had shoulde pads too, but I removed them before taking the pictures. I could tell buy the stitch it was added on, but saying "stitch" is being very nice lol.... took one snip and they pulled right out... more like tied on But im glad, either they didn't know better or did it to not damage the dress either way I am very glad!

oh and thank you for the suggestions... you see I take criticism well.... I dont want to "think" im right because no one corrected me... the more mistakes I make sooner, the faster I can grow..... So thankyou, THANK you, for all the wonderfull suggestions and I will take them all good and bad,,,my mouth is wide open like pac man!!!

Thank you all once again!

Jennifer, I think you are doing great and just wanted to say that it does a lot of us 'old souls' good to see someone with your enthusiasm and thirst to learn about vintage!
