I\'m having a John Bates moment!

I'm off to the dry cleaners this afternoon to collect my Jean Varon dress. It's been with them for a week and apparently it took two of them to press it since there's so much fabric. Stay tuned as I'll get some photos to you later. :)

ALSO, I've just ordered a fantastic book "John Bates: Fashion Designer" as recommended by another VFG member and can't wait for that to arrive next week. You might say I've gone a little John Bates mad.

I came across these John Bates (for Jean Varon) frocks in Vogue January 1965. Both frocks are incredibly romantic and not like any other Jean Varon designs I've seen before.

Black ecru lace over white taffeta petticoat dress. Miniscule bodice with a flowery skimmy skirt to the ankles.

Photos of my Jean Varon frock to follow shortly. :)

Just back from the cleaners. It took them a very, very long time to clean this and had to literally hold the sections of fabric by hand and work all the way around the dress bit by bit. There's so much fabric.

My dry cleaner is very experienced in dealing with vintage clothing. His father worked in the fabric manufacturing industry for nearly 30 years and this is a small-ish family business. He's confirmed the fabric is silk chiffon and also said that it's quite unusual to find printed silk-chiffon like this. He reckons this type of fabric is usually in a plain colour. I wasn't aware of that fact but please let me know if you agree/disagree that. :)

Ok, here it is: Early to mid 1970's silk chiffon evening dress with attached cape.
