In the genes, or in the water?

I've been having a lot of fun reading the posts and viewing the vintage hand mixers in the Water Cooler thread, and got to thinking... We see so many of us here posting our vintage porcelain ware & ceramics, glassware, barware, and even furniture on occasion. I would venture a bet that were we to visit one another's homes, we would not only see vintage apparel & accessories, but antique, vintage, and retro home furnishings, decor, etc. And probably a lot of older homes in which those items reside.

So, what is it? I'm wondering if we were "born" this way, were simply born in the wrong decades, are a product of our environments, a combination of those things....

Did your love of "all things vintage" grow out of your love for vintage clothing, or vice versa?

For me, I grew up in a home with a mother who loved antiques and vintage home decor, and trotted my younger sister and I all over New York state scouring antique and junk shops. I continued collecting into my adult years. My love affair with vintage clothing & jewelry did not start till I was in my late 20s/early 30s.

So I blame it all on my mother! Well, and then there was my father, who was a packrat and who enjoyed finding really old and antique bottles, coins, stamps, etc. Though he didn't really collect, he delighted in his occasional "find."

Must be both heredity and environment.... Both my husband & I swear we were meant to have been born in the 30s, so we could have been adults in the 50s.

And, it sure is nice to have a spouse or partner who shares this disease....

Anne, my story is similar - I got it from my mum. We always had old things in our home and she ran an antique shop for a while. All our homes were old, and same for the vintage cars in the driveway. I've always been surrounded by beautiful things from the past, I can't imagine living any other way.

My love for vintage started with books as a child - we had a big library at home and I would spend hours going through all the picture books before I could even read. That's how I found paintings of Elizabethan costumes and so on.....just loved them so when I was five I started telling people I was going to be a "dress designer" when I grew up, but what I really meant was costume. I ended up studying costume design and it's been helpful but my real love is what people wore in the past and why.

Nicole.
