Hi Mndy, The fur looks like Leopard. Leopard became endangered and outlawed for trade in 1973 so if the fur is leopard the coat would have most likely been made before 1973.
It does not look like a dyed fur to me but it could be a dyed fur made to look like leopard. You can only tell for sure if you can see the hind side of the pelts or if you know what leopard fur feels like.
In the older coats there is sometimes a union label hiding within one of the pockets or along a side seam. That label helps to identify age too. There may not be one though.

Some of the wonderful folks here will come along and be able to help you with dating.

Thanks! Union label is for Int. Ladies Garment Workers Union, Coat and Suit Industry...a number is printed, '807053'. I unfortunately know nothing about dating from Union labels.

That's not leopard, it's too plush. Looks pretty soft on the cuff - coney masquerading as leopard perhaps. But I'm no fur expert, so wait up for one to come along!

Have you checked out our resource for Union labels? it's here.

Cute jacket - I agree with '60s for a date and agree that it doesn't look like real leopard, although you can see the jacket is well made and of good quality.

It is very hard to detmermine leopard just from viewing photos but I happen to have some leopard scraps from a coat that I reconstructed.

The pattern of my real leopard, the coloring, and the spots do look different.

There are different types of leopards but I can see where the others are coming from when I compare the photos.

Here is my leopard coat and some of the scraps;

I apologize for stating it might be leopard. It appears that it is not.
You can still check if the fur is real though by plucking a few furs and doing a burn test. If the fur burns fast and smells like hair burning it is real fur.

I agree that it is 60's and I know I've had something with that same label, but I'm sorry, I can't remember what it was.

I really like your coat, it's my taste exactly. approximately what size is it? s,m,l,xl...?

The Martha label is in the VFG label resource:

"Martha (1898-1996) was Martha Phillips, who started her Park Avenue boutique in 1932. In time, her shop became one of the best known fashion shops in New York City. She eventually opened six stores, among them a store in Palm Beach, Florida that was opened in 1945. Martha was joined in her business by daughter Lynn Manulis. In 1993 the Park Avenue store was closed and Martha died in 1996 at the age of 98. The last store, the Palm Beach branch, was closed in 2003.

sMarie, thanks, I had found some info on Martha Phillips and saw the post from lkranieri (thanks!!); I would guess size is medium, approximate measeurements (no ease, just measurements) are chest 38", across fromt 15", and across back at shoulder 14" (this seems to be the most restricting when I tried it on). The length at center back is 25", and outside sleeve to bottom of cuff is 21". It seems to be a pretty decent weight wool crepe and is fully lined.
