Hi everyone,

Does anyone know anything about the Dorothy Pinnock label? I recently found this skirt, which I think is just so wonderful, and wanted to see if there was anything interesting about it. All I could find online is that it was a Dublin-based shop from about 1954 to 1983, and I’m guessing the skirt dates from the 60s. I also found a few items for sale that bear the DP label but nothing that made my jaw drop, not like this skirt does.

Any tidbits you might know or have access to would be most welcome.

All best,
Jenny

Hi Jennifer, very striking maxi skirt. I'd date it to the early '70s. Unfortunately I have no information about the label for you.

Thank you, Nicole! May I ask what's the rationale for the early 70s date? I thought 60s, but that was mostly just a guess/gut feeling, and I suspect you have a better reason for your date. Would love to hear a bit more if you can spare the time.

Hi, My name is Eamonn Kelly and I'm a retired archaeologist from Dublin, Ireland. In 1967 when I was a seventeen year old lad I worked for a year for Dorothy Pinnock Ltd which was a high-end knitwear company based in Dartry, Dublin. The factory was located in what had formerly been the garage of the Dublin Tramway Company where trams were once parked overnight. I was employed as understudy to the knitting supervisor, a friendly, capable man named Paddy Gillis. The CEO was a man named Brian Blannerhasset. About sixty women worked for the company which I found to be a good employer. I was very inexperienced but I was impressed by the demand for very high standards in the making of the produsts which were carefully vetted by quality control in the persaon of Paddy Gillis. After my time in Pinnock's I went to college to pursue different career options. I ended my working days as Keeper of Irish Antiquities in the National Museum of Ireland, looking after the nation's archaeological treasures. Hope this is of help.

Thank you so much, Eamonn, for giving us all this background on the Dorothy Pinnock Ltd company. It is always nice for us to hear from those who worked for these companies and to learn of the fond memories you hold. Your other career path was a most interesting one, the amazing items you had to care for. Thank you again for letting us know.
