Ironing A Wedding Dress

I have a late 40's wedding dress with very thick (rayon?) satin and I am having no luck ironing it.

How hot should I go with the iron? Steam? No Steam? I have tried going hotter with no steam...but of course I am afraid of scorching and the steam does not seem to help.

Any suggestions?

I know I've ironed wedding gowns using a press cloth on each side, so the dress fabric is sandwiched. That way it won't pick anything up from the ironing board cover, and it won't pick anything up (or get scorched) from the iron.

However, it has been many years since I've done a wedding gown, so I don't remember my settings. I usually start with a rather low heat setting and work my way up. Precise treatment depends on the fabric. Definitely don't steam silk, especially chiffon.

I've never had luck just steaming things...
