Is there a better name for this than "maxi coat'?

Hi Guild and Guests,
I've had this coat listed as a maxi coat 1960s 'gold brocade tapestry'. I've wondered if it was actually meant to be a dressing gown and if I am right on the date and if I am calling the fabric correctly. There is no label.
Thanks alot,
Lauren

Hi Lauren,

I believe this would have been a full length overcoat with a matching full length gown. It would actually be a bit earlier than the "maxi coat" but people often refer to these as maxis due to their length.
Yours also has the shorter length of sleeve to be worn with a longer glove.

Beautiful fabric!

I call these opera coats. If I may make a suggestion, the black cuffs of your dress might cause some confusion as they look like they are part of the coat, especially from the back. Mary Jane is right, there was likely a matching evening gown at one point.

thanks for the suggestion Jody. Those shots are from a while ago and need to be redone....I see what you mean about the sleeves. I'm assuming the dress would have been sleeveless?
