Caryn will be able to tell you the specific points I'm sure but I imagine it will include the method of construction of the pelts, and the lining material, style and construction. This stole appears to be shorter at the front than many I've seen, I don't know if that points one way or another. Can you take a photo of it laid open to show the lining and a close up of the fabric please?

Hi there,

Some of the ways I date stoles whether they are labeled or unlabeled are by the collar style, collar size, pocket style, length of panels in front, lining fabric used, lining color, lining detail, and other features that were popular during certain eras.

Here's what I notice about your stole. No collar, lovely satin lining that appears to have either have a machine embroidered pattern throughout or a quilted trapunto affect. I cannot see it close enough to be sure. I also notice a rounded back and wide square front panels that are short.

In the 40s and in the 50s aside from wraps and clutch style capes stoles commonly had long panels in front. In the early to mid 60s the front panels of stoles were shorter more often.

Based on what I see; the shorter front panels, no collar, and the lining I would guess this to date to the 60s.

With that said the entire stole looks a little small to me. I believe it was either made for a petite person, a junior, or a child for a formal occasion.

Thanks Caryn,
The lining is a rayon-y chainlink-y print....I don't alter things generally (don't have the skills and I like to keep things authentic) but I am inclined to get some satin ribbon or something to create a tie at the bottom of the front panels. My daughter has worn fur collars and stoles like these pinned shut with a cool broach. They do look great with the right one.
