Is this a nurse uniform?

Hi again,

I have been researching this shirt/ dress/ top for a while now and wasn't able to find much on the Shane Permanent Press label but based on some references, think is either a nurse or some other kind of uniform. Is this correct or is this just an unusually long shirt. I think it is from the mid 70s due to the union label but not really sure. I saw some similar ones that sold on Etsy and they are calling them short dresses but the buttons appear to be too high up from the bottom hem to be a dress (in my opinion). I also found a Laverne & Shirley smock from the 70s with that label. Thoughts?

Thank you,
Victoria

This reminds me of what my mom's hairdresser in the 70s used to wear, maybe a beautician's coat?

Do the buttons open all the way down? I agree that it's a uniform, but can't see a nurse wearing this: hairdresser or beautician sounds about right. I think it's from the late '70s - an earlier one would have had a bigger collar and less restrained styling, I think.

Too long for a blouse or a top, and the front pockets also suggest dress as you wouldn't see them if they were tucked in (too long for a smock too).

Nicole,

The last button is at slightly below waist level and the rest is just open which is why I didn't think it could be a dress unless you are wearing scrubs or some other garment below. What would have hairdressers typically worn below this?
I love the color and I think it could be worn as a shirt with a belt and a pair of pants, right?

Thanks,
Victoria

Yes, if it's open down to the hem, it could likely be a "coat" or overdress. I imagine the lady would wear her street clothes underneath, or something light. A bit like how chemists and doctors wear lab coats (although they often wear the open).

I actually had a dress like this, but in a fine printed wool, bought new in 1981. Mine wasn't open all the way down the front though it had the same sleeves and silhouette. I wore it with a wide belt and boots.
