Hi Everyone,
I'm assuming this to be 1960s but am not sure if it would be best described as a pillbox or turban?
Also, does the bow look right?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Lauren

I've always thought of a turban style hat with having the fabric cris-cross and/or come to a knot in the front. I don't see that in your pictures.

I would have said pillbox only, turban to me has to envelope the head somewhat, this would simply sit atop I think.

I am not sure this is 1960's. I could be a later hat from a wedding shop or wedding department of a fabric shop. Hope others will respond.

I'm no hat expert either, just my humble opinion - but I'd call this a pillbox and not a turban. My gut feeling says 80s, not 60s. It reminds me more of that period. I don't know - it looks pretty simply made and I think from a 60s hat I would expect something "more" - more nicely made inside, less tulle... I didn't immediately think of it as a wedding hat, but I think Marian has a point there - I can see this as an 80s hat worn at a wedding...

Eaton's was a major department store in Canada from 1869 to 1999, when they went bankrupt. It was actually my favourite department store in Montreal.

I would say this hat is from the 1960s and was most likely something that would have been worn for a wedding.

I have had hats with this label in the past and they were definitely 1960s in style.

I did find an example that sold on Etsy with this same label - 93019866.

Hi,

To me, its a toque (with turban elements). Millinery terms are loosely used and change from decade to decade, but this is more toque than turban or pillbox although it has elements of both. I think it is from the 1960's. The style is classic, but the label looks very 60s. Also, the material used for the interior looks like a faille of decent quality, and I would think an 80s hat would have used poly satin, etc. It is unstructured, and I suspect it may have been custom made to match a dress. Possibly for a wedding, but also could have been made to match a spring suit or special occasion ensemble that was purchased at the store. Eatons had a custom millinery department, but I don't know when they stopped making custom hats in house. Like many department stores, that likely stopped sometime in the 1950s or 1960s. The bow should stand up more, a bit more poufy and higher, so give it a VERY light steam and gently puff it out and stuff with tissue afterwards and let it sit for a bit.
