I found this information about Ideal Cuir - designer, with Michelle Costas, ready-to-wear and accessories line for Idéal-Cuir, Paris, 1973

Even though I found other leather coats marked this same way listed as 80's I believe that they have to be from 1973 since that is the only time that I could find that he worked for them. Does anyone know about Ideal-Cuir or Michelle Costas?

after research, prices for these jackets seem to be all over the board and does anyone else think that this is a mans jacket? A EU 42 would make it about a US mens 34.. right? Is that a small/small medium?

I agree, the broad shoulders and the blousing in the back look '80s to me, and I also agree that it is a woman's coat. Several sites say a FR 42 is equivalent (approximately) to a US 12, but go by the coat's measurements.

Just to underscore the dates given here, an article in the Oct. 20, 1985 Washington Post starts with:

"Was it really only 10 years ago that black leather was the prerogative of the blousons noir, mostly the young bikers for whom the beaten-up black leather jackets offered protection and style? And not much more recently than that, black leather was coopted first by Claude Montana in his bold and aggressive styles for Ideal Cuir."

One of the most outstanding designers ever. To see 30 years of beautiful work have look at this slide- show. Be warned it goes on for a very long time;

To be sure he was doing the big shoulders in the late 70's. The white fibre contect label looks fairly new to me and I've never seen the 'Classic' label before but who knows. I would recommend leafing through old copies of French magazines - if you have a fashion institute/college nearby with a good library I'd spend some time there.

I watched the 98 runway show and saw the leathers that CM introduced again and they all seemed to be a more streamline fit than the ones from earlier. No large shoulder pads either. I have found pics of quite a few of the older pieces from the 70s thru the 80's but am not sure where this fits in. I found pics of the leather Ideal Cuir label and this has that same leather tag but has the white one on the front of it. As for the fibre content label it is an older one made with that stiffer material they did back then. (I had more than a few jackets with labels like this one in my closet). I could not find any labels that said Classic which is what is throwing me so that is why I was looking into Ideal Cuir as a company but can't really find anything.

Oh.. and loved the slide show and actually saw a jacket with this color and one with the zip above the breast like these. And this jacket does have the older Riri zippers - not the new ones.

According to Pamela Golbins book Fashion Designers

"Claude Montana designed four collections for Michelle Costas, Plus a small series with the label Idéal cuir" They do not mention dates but they go on to say that in 1976 he created a collection with the label Claude Montana for Ferrer y Sentis . I am assuming the Idéal cuir label would be pre-1976.

As for his solo labels....

Another book I have says the house of Montana was founded in 1979

Thames and Hudson says his first clothing collection was launched in 1977

Thank you for that information Melody. I know that I personally was doing the huge shoulder pads by 1983 and can quite clearly remember my best friends Norma Kamali dress during that time having quite large shoulder pads (I obsessed over that dress and can clearly picture it in my mind still!!) so I do know that this shape was quite popular by the early 80's...

Today I found a Claude Montana small jacket, that looks like a shrug, that buttons up. It is size 34. It is in a gorgeous lilac buttery leather. Seems to be in good condition considering the age.

On the label is it written: CLAUDE MONTANA pour IDEAL CUIR
Made in PARIS FRANCE

There is another label that states it is Style/Modele 2203
Blouson Agneau Plonge, Colour 001 51

I'd like to know how old it is, and what it would be worth. Will try adding a photo, I have only just found this site. Thanks!
