Is this drawstring bag victorian or later?

and what would be some keywords for discrip. The inner bag/lining is silk. The weaving on the handle reminds me of the victorian hair jewelry.tia!

That looks like one of the Teens home sewer projects you see in Ladies Home Journal! And the handle looks like summer camp skills- I cannot remember what the technique is called.

And the handle looks like summer camp skills

I'm hoping I'm not misreading a joke, because it really does remind me of braiding lanyard (or gimp) as a pipsqueak in day camp (I think we called this stitch "box stitch"), though I can see hairwork bracelets in it, too.

And summer camp started in the early 20th c, right? By then hairwork wasn't fashionable anymore but there would have been plenty of women around who had done it when they were younger...

Never thought I'd see a connection between hairwork, gimp, and a purse handle! (The purse is lovely BTW--is the silk rose-colored, as it shows on my monitor?)

That's the first thing I thought of Carrie- my daughter spent an entire summer under a shade tree making bracelets and key fobs for every living soul she knew~ I still have mine on my keys.

I just never thought of kids from other eras doing the same thing~

Pretty purse:wub:

Thank you ladies. The silk satin is a bit darker than in the photos, more like a burgandy.I checked the Taylor Auction site but couldn't get a clear pic of the bag, I'll go look again. Dana

The weaving on the purse handle reminds me of the lariats I made at camp, too. The body of the purse looks like macramé. I copied and enlarged the handbag with the green lining from the Kerry Taylor auction and pasted the picture into a Word doc. so I could see it in more detail, but it's still hard to see details. I see the similiarity but the bags don't look identical to me. The handles are different and the one in the auction is fringed on the bottom. I think Dana's purse is from the 1960's or early '70's and is more "flower child/ethnic" than Victorian. The silk looks like Thai silk. The auction mentions purses dating from the 1860's and others. The one with the green lining might be one of the "others." The red leather purse doesn't look that old. I looked through a few of my books and couldn't find anything like either purse, but I am not an expert on purses - by any means!

thanks Linn, but I really believe this bag is much older, the interior shows it's age and even the repair on the handle is an old one. I will try and take pics of the interior. Dana

No joke - I really thought it looked like a hand crafted lariat!

Thank you - macrame just would NOT come to my tired brain.

The lining is clearly old: looks like a Victorian silk to me. Not to say that it couldn't be an older lining added to a more modern purse, but it does suggest a certain age. Can you tell if the lining is original? Looks to me like it might be a little long for the purse, as it's bunching up a bit at the bottom.

Nicole

Nicole: the "bunching up" is on the top, below is a pic of the interior. Yes, I think the lining is original. The bottom is sewn together. The macrame material looks like the laces on the older shoes, can you see on the close-up?
