Is this dress and coat 1920\'s?

Hello all I am FINALLY back! Had a funeral so that was fun but on the plus side I was able to win at a local auction and this lady kept everything since she was a little girl clothes wise and she died at 104... so there is a WIDE range of clothes that I have and the dates and styles are starting to blur to me.... I have HUNDREDS of dresses I am going through and my brain is about to pop... i am not that experienced with pre 50s stuff either,,, have not been lucky enough to personally see it yet so I am in heaven,..

Now on with the questions... Is the dress 20's ... I think it is but rather poofy for the era? was is a blk n cream wedding dress? or just a formal? double layered no tag i guess 10 or so side snaps.... no elastic or zippers. there is boning sewn into the bodice. I am guessing 20s from snaps placement and just the length and bodiece area but something seems off so i dont really know.

Also number two is a long velvet jacket.... this lady was shorter than me and this thing drags the floor by 2-3 inches on me. I think it looks 20's 30s ish apperance wise but fabric condition seems newer.. like 60s ish... the inside is a beatutiful silk satin no label but I think there used to be one... or perhaps the lining was the makers mark itself? the sleeves are taperd.. very tight on wrists and sleeves are full length, also half way up the sleeves there is seams that are a dramatic V shap. I have lightened some of the pictures to try and show this.. please any info or dating advice on this would be great..

Thanks for reading yet another novel!! thank you all and cant wait to see what I learn!! :-)

Jennifer

I think they're around 30s on the dress, probably a young lady's gown.
The velvet, I think may be earlier than 20s.

Pre 40s isn't my strong point, either, but we have several folks here who know it well.

lol thanks jody... funny i was jsut looking at some of your e-bay stuff to get a price range on some lots I am putting up lol!!! thank you ladies.. glad to know that I wasnt too far off... I am so used to hoping that I found this old that I am not sure lol...

One more question... there is some rust in the dress... do you think I should soak it on oxy..... it seems pretty sound fabric and seam wise.. or would this one be better to leave up to the new owner?

Thanks
Jennifer

Jennifer, wow, what a score! These 2 pieces are lovely, and I hope you share more with us! I totally agree with 30s on the dress (not my strong suit, either, but soon as I saw it, I thought 30s). Can't tell on the coat; if Jody thinks it's 30s, I'd go with that....

NO OXY!!!! It will eat this fabric alive!

I would leave cleaning to the new owner. You run the risk of ruining this type of fabric with anything harsher than water. There are also occasions when water will disolve fabric, even though it looks fine. Sometimes the dirt and time is all that holds stuff together. I disolved a WW2 army dress shirt this weekend with just water and deterg. It happens :clueless:

When cleaning anything that IS washable, remember to start with the least invasive, the gentlest solution first. Oxy is rough on stuff. Maybe it can be the first choice for stained poly but then it takes a lot to kill poly. ;)

If you need to freshen the coat, a gentle run over with the wand vac and a few days of protected outdoor breezes will do wonders. If it is strong, and can take a tumble, you can knock out a lot of dust with a run through the fluff (no heat) dryer cycle.

Jennifer that dress is aMAzing!! wow, what a score for you!!

and another vote for 30's.

wowow and best of luck to you!!

oh, and as to your laundering question, i would be hesitant to wash, especially with the high contrast black/creamy yellow color...but am interested to see what others will have to say about that

Holy Cats!!! That dress is just lovely~

I've never had success with cleaning very old items with contrasting colors, especially darker dyes. They run even in plain water. Of course, I rarely find such items and have extremely limited experience when it comes to cleaning such things - I finally have accepted I can't was everything and must leave some things as found. Some time on a padded hanger in a shaded, breezy spot does make quite a difference though.
