Is this dress/jacket early 30\'s? Thanks...

I'm trying to list a bunch of thirties items that I have but I keep feeling such a learning curve. Is this set from about 1933/1934 or would this be later? It is a celedon green, either a very fine rayon or satin - no unfinished place for me to snip so I haven't tested it, cut on the bia, with a matching jacket. Also, should I leave the white background or do you think I should go with a darker one?

l would say mid to late 30's actually '38'39, the bias cut and the shorter puff sleeves, went on into the early to mid 40s....its lovely.

thanks.. I have a website that I use that has fashion silhouettes and I just wasn't quite sure where this fell because I didn't see anything with length in the later 30's silhouettes.

You are correct with the dating - 1933-34. You probably have this reference;

It is a lovely ensemble. There would have been a self-coloured belt. There's some really nice detailing I can just make out on the collar and cuffs.

I'd probably use a more contrasting darker background.

Vertugarde - yup, that is the website that I use. The dress and jacket do have great details - although the dress is missing the belt and has some flaws that need to be fixed prior to being able to be worn. So you think this is early 30's even though I do see puffy sleeves in the late 30s as well. I thought the basic shape of the dress was a better fit with the earlier 30s silhouettes.

here is a little of the detail:

The main features that categorise the approximate date of this dress and jacket are the skirt length, the rows of narrow rib top-stitching and the cut and detail of the skirt. Day hems were 3 to 4 inches below the knee whilst evening dresses were 10 to 12 inches maximum from the floor for night time or ankle length. The neat tight little bow is also very typical.

Although the cut of sleeves during this decade were incredibly inventive and architectural in design short sleeves were common but in general in the early years not as puffy as the 'Snow White' style that was popular in the later 30's. The fabric also dictated the way the sleeve would fall. The sleeves on this dress have no gathers and I wouldn't describe them as puffy.

Hope this helps.

If necessary, I would rip the lining a tad so you can find a snippet to test. I think silks in this period were much more expensive than rayon. Claire

This dress is actually very long. My new manni stands fairly tall and on a 5'6" woman this dress would drag the ground - it is nearly 59 inches in length. Thanks Vertugarde for that information. I'm going to try and find a place to snip to test the material...
