Is this dress late 40\'s? Thanks....

I am such a fish out of water when it comes to dresses of this era so any help is appreciated.

Joan Doris for Rona, centered side zipper, ribbon detailing (that's right.. right?), rayon, shoulder pads, (had underarm pads that I removed because.. well.. I just removed them), 46 inches in length from shoulder to hem. And what words describe this dress?

Thanks.. I appreciate it. I am always apprehensive once I get into the 30's/40's territory. I personally like the late 40's era clothing as it is so feminine and yet so powerful, I just don't have it down as well as I would like.

You may have found this info already;

"Rona" was really Randolph Rosenthal, who founded the Rona Dress Company in 1939, adding the Joan Doris label as the firm prospered. The Rona reputation was based on a fashion viewpoint which rejected "radical styling", but focused on contemporary fashion with particular emphasis on quality and fit."

Yes, the dress looks crepe and probably late 40's. Can you show the label? Maybe a better close-up of the trim - could be ribbon or a braid.

The underarm pads? Do you mean dress shields? Was the belt with the dress?

Belt wasn't with the dress, underarm shields - that is what I meant and I removed them. Belt was unfortunately not with the dress.

and I'll take a quick close up of the ribbon. It is a sold piece of fabric - I am pretty sure the same fabric as the dress, sewn into a thin strip and then sewn onto the dress and it looks like that ribbon candy that I used to eat at Christmas as a kid.

okay.. got a pic of the ribbon. And thanks for the info on the Rona company. I did not know that information but, thanks to you, I do now! :spin:

Thank you that's great info. It is a very good late 40's dress with flattering self trim that echoes the drape of the skirt. The belt loops are there? But the original belt which would have been in the same self fabric is missing. The black velvet belt is a good choice.

You are so right. Late 40's fashion is fascinating.

I always tell people to collect original patterns and magazines of the period and build up your own reference library.

that is an absolutely gorgeous, classic dress. delightful lines!

yes, 40's. yes, looks to be rayon. not sure what that sort of ribbon treatment is called, but it does look like that ribbon candy from christmas time, doesn't it!

good luck, she is beautiful!!
