Is this from the 40s?

Hello! I just wanted to get an opinion on this slip. My thought is that it is an early 1940s slip, but I'm really unsure. The fabric feels like parachute fabric (perhaps nylon?)...I know that nylon and silk were rationed in the 40s for parachutes in the war and thought that maybe it was from early 1940s. However, it does seem a bit long for the 1940s and has a higher waist. There's a side metal zipper as well. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks so much!

With the belt, it reminds me more of a nightgown than a slip. Are there any tags or labels inside or does it look home made? Are the edges of the seams "pinked"?

Ruth's right: zippers aren't usually found in nightgowns. Endless Alley is also right that the belt/sash is an usual detail for a petticoat.

I think it might be a antique petticoat style of dress that was made by during the '60-70s nostalgia revival but a seamstress who liked the earlier techniques, or a costume piece.

The fabric looks like a light cotton with a self-stripe, I can't see parachute at all as the gathering on the bust and waist isn't as soft and fine as it would be with silk or nylon parachute. Is the sash cotton tape? Is it sewn onto the garment around the back and then lose around the front?

Knowing more about the construction will help: is the front waistband elasticated? What are the seams and hem like?

Hi,

This reminds me of 2 things. One is that is appears to be made from a parachute, and so may be some sort of costume or post WWII to early 1950s make-do garment to be worn under something else. After the war so many commodities were still rationed or hard to get, even into the mid 50's, so parachute silk was still used for home made stuff. Another is that it is from the very late 1970s when parachute cloth was popular for both new, and home made clothing. I recall in the late 70s early Punk days we often made or bought clothing made from old parachutes. But I really have no idea what yours is, I just wanted to toss in my ideas....

Interesting point Barbara - if this dress was shortened it would be similar to my first Little Black Dress, bought in 1982. That was made of a fine black crepe, but the style was the same. I see the same styles are currently in vogue again.

Hello Everyone!

Sorry it's taken me a minute to respond...I just got back to Chicago after being out of town. Thank you so much for all of your input!! As for the answers to all of your questions, the material is definitely not cotton...it feels very much like parachute (or similar to a sports jersey in a way) very slick and soft. I will be sure to get some better photos of the inner finishing and post later tonight when I get home. I didn't see a tag and the inner seams from what I remember are fairly finished. I'll reply a little bit later with more details. And thanks again!!!

Hi ladies,

I was able to get more photos of the garment as follows. Also, in response to your questions, the waistband is not elastic, rather a fixed seam. The inner seams are not pinked, they are for the most part, finished. And on the fabric, you can see in a following photo both the weave close-up, and how it shows the wood grain of my chair under one layer.
