Hey I have done some pretty deep research on this myself and I am pretty sure this is mink, but I would love to have someone validate my thoughts. It looks as though it was either dyed this deep black, or that the undercoat is just a reddish brown. It also looks like the pelts are long and skinny like a mink would be. The hair is short and very very soft. The only other thought was it could possibly be beaver? I'm not sure of the date but another member was able to identify the tag as being from a company in the 1920's if that helps.

It does not look like mink to me. Perhaps sheared beaver, sheared rabbit.

I see rabbit, dyed and cut much like the faux seal called "Hudson Seal". Just my humble opinion. If we had it to handle we could be more sure.
