Is This Townley Coat 40s or 50s?

Hey Everyone,

I have this lovely green beauty with a mink placket. I love it!!
I think its 40s but wanted a second opinion. It has a National Recovery Board label inside. Im going to photograph it next week, but Im so tempted to just keep it! The coat has a registration number inside, underneath the lining. I read an older post here where someone else had a registration number that ended in 51, which may have indicated the year..but mine doesnt.

Any insight would be very helpful. Thank you! :help:

Can't help with the RN number but I agree with you about '40's. I found several classified ads from 1937 on for Townley coats - never worn cloth with fur trim. Found an ad in Life (Google Townley coats; News; Archives) from 1939 - not your coat. The Towley coats I found from 1949 and into the '50's in ads are much more New Look - much longer, fuller and the trim is just on the collar. I'm pretty sure yours is early - mid '40's.

In the small world department, Mullin's Clothing Store - in Wilmington, D.E. is now called the Saville and is an apartment building (converted in the '80's) now used for housing for students at the Delaware College of Art and Design.

Wow! I just came across this forum and became a registered guest because I saw the beautiful green wool and fur Townley Coat listed above that Elvenom talks about with the pics which I just happened to purchase on eBay on 1/11/15 from a seller in Sacramento, CA! What a small world! The seller didn't know if the fur was mink or what on it. I think maybe it's sable, but I don't know. I saw another coat just like it but size small and in a shade of gray last week on Esty, but they said they thought the fur was shaved beaver. I'm waiting on my coat to be delivered to me by USPS Standard Post, it should get here the day after tomorrow. When did Elvenom part ways with the coat? I'd love to know the history on it and if the lady I bought it from bought it from Elvenom.
