Is this velour?

wouldnt see this as indie or mod...

"indie" refers to those who are into indie rock(as in bands signed to independent labels)....think converse, leather bomber jackets, fringed scarves....kind of scruffy trendy rocker...a young age group.

im guessing "mod" refers to the music/fashion movement in the late seventies- paul weller in his heyday!

but i dont think either of these words is a good description!!!!

I call that velour.

As for the indie mod thing - I guess I would call that somewhat indie, more for the guys though, which is what is pretty much a hipster here in Brooklyn.

If you really want a look at what the hipsters / indies wear this is a GREAT gallery from this summers McCarren Park Pool concerts which is basically the indie hipster mecca.

BTW - This may also make you laugh at some of these peoples fashion choices.

Velour - I lived in those things in the mid -late 70s. In fact I think I owned that exact same one but without the white stripe on the cuff in 1977.

What the heck is the difference between Hipster, Scenester, Indie, Or Mod??

Mod, to me, is cutting edge fashion, or Fashion Forward.

I have seen different Urban Dictionary listings, which have yet to coalesce in my head.

Sorry to HIJACK!!!

Thank you!

From what I can tell on ebay, there is no difference, it's just about perceptions of attracting attention!

For me hipster, indie and mod are all clearly defined and different - no idea what scenester means. Doesn't that depend on the scene?

Each scene produces a different "scenester". I used to hang out in the 80s-90s with a bunch of musos in Perth, Western Australia and we referred to ourselves to "old Perth scenesters" but I doubt anyone else would have known what we were talking about. In those days most would have just called us "alternative". I thought of myself as "indie". Now I call it "old school".

They're all just fairly meaningless labels - Indie and Hipster change with the years, Mod will always mean mid'60s or the early 80s revival (my first sub culture) to me.

indie is a very specific look, at least here in ireland, and in england.

i think people might misuse mod as an abbreviation for modern- without meaning to reference any "look".

i think a "scenester"> is anyone who strives to go by a certain look- to fit into a certain scene... i have never thought of it as a compliment!!

I think Circa makes the most valid point - it depends on where you're at.

And TresChic makes a good point, too. Here in Brooklyn Hipster is a dirty word! No one wants to be called a hipster. It's like an insult. It's comical. So I never use hipster in any of my titles or descriptions but I bet they search that keyword behind closed doors. ha!

To me Indie is the same as Hipster but not an insult. To say someone is into indie fashion/music/whatever is just a style where as calling it hipster is an insult of the highest regard around here. Even though they are totally all hipsters. lol

Mod will always be the 60's fashions / styles for me.

I never even heard of a scenester - maybe that's a more Euro thing?

But I really think it's probably a geographical thing. Certain things will fit into a certain aesthetic in one place, other places not so much. And then there are sometimes items that appeal to all of them.

Trend following is research in itself!
