iSSEY MIYAKE Top/Blouse/Scarf... Help in dating & Identifying

Hi guys,

I'd like to ask if anyone would be interested in helping me identify this very peculiar Issey Miyake item that I got from a shop. It looks like a scarf but sewn so I tried wearing it as a top/blouse and it still works that way, at least in the way I see it. I am seriously puzzled by this since I don't know if I'll label it as a scarf or a top. For now my sister labels it as a scarf and will be selling it as we got a few designer pieces we'll be selling (we plan to include this, finally, and i'm very excited for it regardless of how the sales will turn out). Pardon me for blabbering , I'm just really excited that she will find an owner (hopefully :>) It somehow became my pet fave because I've stored it for so long :)

Label style: Issey miyake w/ a check-like background design, I'm assuming it's late 1980's as written in your label guide.
Code: EG11209 (could you please tell me the importance of that code? nothing happens when I search it on the internet)
Made in Japan, Size M, 100% polyester exclusive of trim, dry clean

I have already uploaded a pic & links for the item. I should be able to provide a pic on how it looks like out of the mannequin and like a scarf, Isn't it just lovely? That's why I'm so in love with it :)

It's been with me for more than a year now, I didn't want to sell it in our country online because I am sure that it will be undervalued and just be lost in a closet somewhere and forgotten forever. I didn't want that to happen as it is too peculiar to be just thrown away when not needed anymore. I really worry about it and I think that vintage collectors will appreciate it more. I already tried asking via private messages but I was encouraged to post here for better feedbacks, thanks Miss cactusandcattails!

It is lovely, but I am afraid I am not much help. It looks like a top as you have it draped, but also like it would be difficult to move your arms.

That is gorgeous! I am no help to you either but hopefully one of our members with more experience in modern designers will check in.

Given the pleats, I'm assuming this is from his Pleats Please line and I don't think it would be any earlier than 1993 from what I read on his website. Pleats Please was introduced in 1989, however (if I'm reading correctly) was really
widely available until 1993.

The Pleats Please line is a separate label that says "Pleats Please." Miyake has produced lots of pleated items through the years that weren't part of that line. The label on this item is a RTW label from the 80s. I think it is simply a multiple-purpose shawl/wrap/scarf accessory. While it looks cool as a top in your photos, it wouldn't be very practical if worn that way.

Thanks everyone! I'm learning quite a few things :) I also agree that it looks impractical as a top but I assure you that you can move in it (if you are small sized).

When I took that picture, I tried to position the label at the backside (the usual in clothes). But it sure does look great as a shawl only that you can't adjust it coz it isn't open ended... :)

Why would designers include clothing sizes in a scarf? Shouldn't wraps be simply free sized?

As a top it's quite similar to the traditional African garments I see some ladies wearing with a matching skirt and sometimes hat/turban wrap.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! ^_^ Everybody thinks it's a scarf... So, I guess I should just give up thinking it's a top :p I was really so sure that there was simply a unique way to wear it :(
haha, seriously, I should have given up a long time ago
I had a knack of correctly guessing a way to wear something
so the fact that I didn't should have meant something, blame it on stubborness!
Ayways, I'm very glad that a lot of people looked it up...
I'm crossing my fingers for the perfect Momma for it!

Interesting item. So do I understand correctly, it's closed? I was wondering possibly a skirt? Wow, I'd love to handle this, seems like it could be worn so many ways.

Hi ms. Glamousurf, yes, it is closed. It's like a long scarf rounded twice then sewn on one end (hope the visual explanation helps :) )
And yes, in my opinion (or I could just be biased :p) you'd love handling it too. I enjoyed handling it the first time, and now again, when I took it out of it's hiding place :)) Sadly, I couldn't make more pics of it's versatility because my imagination is limited plus it's my sis who's selling it on her site & taking the pics and I'm not allowed to touch/play with it so much since it's posted already

And it's so interesting that you noted the skirt idea... I never ever thought of that because the openings are wide... but it could probably work with the help of a few jewelled clamps or pins, right? :) :) :)

Ahh, I just remembered, I did find this in the skirts portion of the shop where I bought it :) but I'm sure they don't know any better than me too. They thought it was a skirt, and I thought it was a top... :)

Hi, I'd just like to thank you guys for the feedbacks! I sold the item already at around 60USD :) so happy that someone adopted it! I hope I can still ask for your guidance in the future again! :>

Hi, it's been so long since I logged in and checked. :) I'd like to ask, how can I contribute to the label resources? I have this Christian Dior Label Tricot et coordonnes it says but I wouldn't know when it is dated but i'd still like to share it, I wanted to show the picture here but the upload button won't work
